Cinema and dance hall Aubette

In 1926, Hans Arp and Sophie Tauber commissioned Van Doesburg to decorate and furnish Aubette, an eighteenth-century, neo-classicist entertainment complex in Strasbourg. This was to be an innovative and modern venue, along the lines of the large entertainment centres in Berlin. Van Doesburg envisaged an integration of space, colour and movement, which was why he used the same lines, areas of colour and materials for the ceiling as he did for the walls. Although this is one of his best-known projects, it turned out to be both a financial and an artistic disappointment for him, as he had to make several concessions where materials were concerned.
