Berlage designs this mausoleum for the World Expo in Paris in 1889. The monument consists of a series of imposing buildings, including an enormous chapel, a pantheon and a crematorium in the hills around Paris.

The cult of the dead is given form in the remembrance of the ancrestors and references to major funerary examples such as the Roman imperial mausoleums, the Gothic cathedrals and the Florentine funerary chapels. Berlage here thematises the funerary culture as a symbolic solidarity between the different  generations.
